For 5 weeks from September 8, 1944, the Czechoslovak army, led by General Svoboda, fought alongside the Soviet army and the German army, 300,000 men in all. The battle, known as "Operation Carpathian", resulted in a German defeat, 180,000 wounded or killed and the near-total destruction of the town of Svidník. It was the deadliest battle of the Second World War on the Eastern Front.
