Practical information : Accomodation Djibouti
Budget & Tips
Djibouti's hotels are improving, but neither small budgets nor lovers of characterful establishments will really be satisfied. At the lower end of the scale, you'll find cheap hotels offering no comfort whatsoever. After that, prices rise very quickly. It's hard to find a decent room for less than €50. The most common price range is €90-130. Outside Djibouti-City, the choice is very limited. Apart from a few modest establishments and three good seaside addresses around Obock and Tadjourah, including the brand-new Gadileh Resort Hotel, camps are the main (100% authentic) accommodation option outside the capital.
To be booked
A trip to Djibouti can't be improvised. The camps, located outside the cities, can generally accommodate no more than 15 people and require logistics that cannot be organized at the last minute, so it's best to plan ahead. In Djibouti-City, hotel accommodation is relatively plentiful, but there aren't that many quality mid-range establishments, so it's best to plan ahead.
What's very local
Guesthouses are virtually non-existent in Djibouti. The only exception is La Terrasse, in Djibouti-Ville, in the Heron district. And a fine exception it is! In town, mid-range hotels are generally well kept and clean, and meet international standards, even if tastes and colors are not always in line with expectations. Apart from hotels in the capital and a few others in the provinces, camps are a typical accommodation option for travellers eager to discover local culture and get off the beaten track. These camps are made up of several basic paillotes or daboytas (traditional Afar huts), equipped with mats on the floor, one or more beds with mattresses, sheets, pillows, blankets and mosquito netting. For your personal comfort, we recommend that you bring your own comforter or sheet, towel and mosquito repellent. Communal areas include the dining area (where meals are shared), sanitary facilities (showers and WCs) and kitchen area. Solar panels and/or generators supply the camps with electricity. Depending on the location (sea or mountains), a certain number of activities are associated with and offered. In all cases, the camps in Djibouti are set in the heart of nature, in superb locations, accessible only by 4x4 (it has to be earned!), sometimes close to a village, which facilitates encounters with local communities. You can buy honey, local handicrafts, fruit and vegetables. In short, a trip to Djibouti will never be complete without an authentic stay in one of these enchanting places for at least one or two nights.
For food lovers
For gourmets, every Friday, luxury hotels (Palace Kempinski and Sheraton, in particular) offer packages including brunch (gargantuan international buffet) with access to the pool for the day.
Smokers
No hotel is entirely non-smoking, but most have rooms that are exclusively non-smoking. Newer hotels are more compliant.
