THE DEVIL'S ISLANDS

A site where you can discover clear waters, turtles, fish of considerable size, sharp rocks...
After leaving the Dankalelo camp on the right, a small jetty comes into view. From here, you can walk along the lava rocks, which jut out into the sea with their sharp black protrusions. Overlooking the clear waters, you can often spot turtles and fish, some of them quite large. A few fishermen try their hand at "harvesting" lobsters from the sharp rocks. We then reach a small sandy passage, well uncovered and accessible only at low tide. It leads to neighboring Ile du Diable, in fact "Little Devil's Island", a beautiful volcanic promontory with chiselled walls close to the coast. These are former underwater craters. Swallows have built nests in these small, tortured cliffs. You can take a partial tour, looking at the strange creatures that populate the rocks: crabs of all sizes, large mineral-looking slugs and so on. On the other hand, the north coast of the island, on the "sea side", is not passable. Here, the walls fall directly into the sea.
Kessel on Le Goubet. "[...] like a horseshoe bristling with spikes, sun-struck ridges loomed. Following the curve of the mountains that supported them, we first saw a cascade of black stones and, at the bottom of this still, dark avalanche, the bay of Goubet-Kharab and, further on, the Gulf of Tadjourah. Near the shore, two sharp islands encircled a harmonious cove...". Joseph Kessel, Fortune carrée.
