VISIT OF THE ARDOUKÔBA VOLCANO
The volcano is a 30-minute walk from Lake Assal, overlooking the open fault that separates Africa from Arabia.
The planet's latest volcano is well worth a hike. Ardoukôba (which means "to sink quickly") emerged from the bowels of the Earth in 1978, following a violent seismic tremor. It only lived for a week. It's possible to climb up to the volcano's crater; the site can be reached in around 2 hours' walk, after a 4x4 approach, and the same for the return journey. The starting point is located to the south-east of the volcano, where the lava has not flowed.
