A dirt and sand track at Ras Bir, a stopover for traders, travellers and explorers.
The N15, a dirt and sand track, runs along the coast for more than 100 km to reach Doumeira on the Eritrean border. As soon as you leave Obock, you enter a vast arid zone, dotted with thorny trees and acacias, where only wide wadi beds punctuate the landscape. Apart from a few gazelles and dromedaries, we do not meet any living soul. The small Guéni massif, between Godoria and Khor Angar, reaches 240m.
For a long time, this region has been a stopover for traders and travellers, as well as for explorers. The great Pharaonic expeditions to the Punt undoubtedly passed through it, despite the absence of remains. The Greeks and the Sabeans used to get water and meat from here. This mostly flat area is the territory of nomadic pastoralists, while the small coastal settlements are populated by fishing families. The difficult living conditions of this region and its scarce water resources lead to a rural exodus. Tourism helps to maintain a small activity around certain sites. This is the case of the Godoria mangrove. This oasis of greenery is worth the detour alone. Just like the Seven Brothers archipelago, a real paradise for divers.
It is possible to go up the coastal road to Khor Angar, access point for the Seven Brothers archipelago and its underwater wonders. Beyond, up to the Eritrean border, it is a military zone strictly forbidden to visitors.
