Independence Day commemorates the end of Iceland's affiliation with Denmark. Beware, it's a public holiday!
In Iceland, the national holiday is held every year on 17 June. Until 1944, Iceland belonged to Denmark. This date was chosen at the time of the proclamation of independence in homage to the date of birth of Jón Sigurdsson, former leader of the pacifist movement for Icelandic independence. On that day, in the morning, an official ceremony takes place, and the festivities last from the afternoon until late at night. Beware, it is a holiday in Iceland!
