SKAFTAFELLSHEIÐI
A remarkable rocky promontory in a superb setting, a great address for hiking and birdwatching enthusiasts.
One of the few non-glaciated areas in the park, accessible even to non-mountaineers, is the rocky promontory of Skaftafellsheiði. This promontory is sheltered by two glacial tongues and valleys, creating a surprisingly mild microclimate at these latitudes. The nature here is breathtaking, with glacial tongues descending to the plain. It is an ideal hike for magnificent views of the glacier. There is a lot of birdlife here: snipe, meadow pipit, kinglet and golden plover, and sometimes arctic foxes or minks.
