A remarkable alluvial plain at the foot of Skaftafellsheiði, the largest sandy area in Iceland.
At the foot of Skaftafellsheiði lies the alluvial plain Skeiðarársandur, the "sands of the Skeiðará". This sandur is a plain formed by the meltwater of the glaciers. Covering nearly 1,000 km², it is the largest expanse of sand in Iceland. This plain extends into Morsárdalur, the valley of the river Morsá, which borders Skaftafellsheiði to the west. To the east rises Öræfajökull, the "glacier of the wasteland". Beware of potential sandstorms, which can occur in September in particular.
