A huge glacier dominating a remarkable landscape of black volcanic sands in Skaftafell.
On Route 1, leaving Skaftafell, the huge ice mass of Öræfajökull dominates the black sandar where the milky arms of the glacial rivers meander, and below it is a desolate land of black sands torn from the volcanoes, stretching from Skreiðará to Breiðamerkursandur. The large Viking farmsteads of early settlement were completely wiped out here by the catastrophic flooding that followed the subglacial volcanic eruption of Öræfajökull in 1362. Note: Öræfajökull refers to both the volcano and the glacier of the same name.
