VALLEY OF GLERÁRDALUR
Varied landscapes composed of scree slopes and tongues of creeping glaciers that descend to the valley
Beyond the Hamrahamrar, the Glerárdalur valley takes its name from the Glerá, "river of glass", which carries alluvium of obsidian (black volcanic stone resembling glass). The varied landscape is made up of scree slopes and tongues of creeping glaciers that descend into the valley. In 1920, a dam and hydroelectric plant were built above the waterfall on the Glerá River. A footpath, dating from that time, follows the river on the north side of the canyon. The dam has also recently been repaired.
