ICELANDIC EMIGRATION CENTRE
The museum is housed in three buildings on the harbor, and is the former Hofsos warehouse, which was built with wood imported from Denmark.
This beautiful museum is housed in three buildings on the harbour. At the end of the 19th century, more than 16,000 Icelanders (1/5 of the population) emigrated to the New World. They were notably pushed into exile by the eruption of Askja in 1875, which made the air toxic and impoverished the soil. Also worth seeing, in the old Hofsós warehouse, which was built in 1777 with wood imported from Denmark, is an exhibition on the hunters and fishermen of Drangey Island.
