A rock composed of basaltic organs in the peninsula of Vatnsnes, a natural fortress that emerges from the mountain range.
Borgarvirki, the 'fortress', is a rock made of basalt organs on the Vatnsnes peninsula. This natural fortress emerges from the mountain range that separates Lake Vesturhóp from the Víðidalur valley. At the top, which contains a spring, one can see the remains of dwellings. Its history is not well known, but it is believed that Borgarvirki was used as a defence of the valley in the 10th and 11th centuries, as mentioned in a legend, and as a pen for animals. From this place there is a beautiful panoramic view to admire.
