HORNBJARG CAPE
The most majestic of the peninsula's promontories, it's a world of its own, home to polar foxes.
Hornbjarg Cape is the peninsula's most majestic headland. Completely uninhabited, Hornbjarg is a world apart. The Drangajökull ice cap, which blocks access to the land, stretches out in sharp tongues of ice, as if to underline the wildness and beauty of the place. It's here that you can discover the Hornstrandir nature reserve, one of Iceland's wildest places, renowned for its profusion of birds, but above all for the presence of several thousand polar foxes, which thrive here in great numbers.
Hornstrandir is a nature reserve with no roads. It can only be reached by boat in summer from Bolungarvik, Isafjördur or Nordurfjördur, or on foot from Nordurfjördur for the most courageous (around ten days).
Here, there's no electricity, no network, no hotel, no supermarket... You're totally cut off from the world! So plan your trip carefully, and bring a map, a compass, a GPS and something to face the elements.
Only camping is permitted in the reserve, in designated areas such as Hornbjarg and Hornvik.
As magical as this place is, it's not for everyone! Conditions can be extreme and the paths dangerous if you get lost. Day trips are offered by operators such as West Tours, but the current average price is 300 euros (including boat). That's a lot, but it's surely one of the best options for discovering the reserve in complete safety.
