THE SQUARE TOWER OF PORT
A square-shaped tower to discover an exhibition on the fortification of Corsica's shores at Porto.
After suffering several Moorish and Barbary invasions, the Gulf of Porto took advantage of its relief to build watchtowers from high points such as Capo Rosso. The Tour de Porto, for its part, was built in the commune of Ota, at the head of the gulf, on the rocky promontory overlooking the mouth of the Porto river. It overlooks the village, the marina and the small port from the top of its rock, 45 m above sea level. Built in the 16th century to keep an eye on the horizon, it was linked to the other towers in the Gulf to warn the population of any danger. One of the first to be built on such a scale, its square shape gives it the appearance of a fortified castle, even though its role was never to defend, but to warn. Listed as a Monument Historique in 1946, it was restored in 1993 and made accessible to the public. The Genoese Tower of Porto houses an exhibition on the history of Corsican Genoese towers. It can be reached in just a few minutes on foot via a small granite path.
