ST. LEOPOLD'S CHURCH (KIRCHE AM STEINHOF)
This church located in a psychiatric complex is the consecration of the alliance between aesthetics and practicality.
This is an exceptional building. In the eastern suburbs of Vienna, 9 km from the city center, the St. Leopold am Steinhof church, standing on the top of its hill, is an architectural jewel built according to the plans of Otto Wagner, in the Art Nouveau style and characteristic of the Vienna Secession. Located in a psychiatric complex, the church was built between 1903 and 1907. It can be seen from afar thanks to its copper-covered dome. It was designed to achieve a harmonious and effective combination of aesthetics and practicality. In fact, this religious building was designed to meet the needs and particularities of a public with psychiatric problems. The interior, dressed in white marble, is extremely bright thanks to a particular orientation so that the atmosphere is more pleasant and soothing for the patients. The floor is slightly sloped so that even those at the back of the building can see the priest; as for the holy water fonts, to avoid any risk of contagion, one does not dip one's hand in them but collects the holy water that flows from a gilded Art Nouveau style tank welded to the wall at the entrance. Two artists worked with Otto Wagner: Koloman Moser for the glass mosaics in the windows and Othmar Schimkowitz for the angels on the columns of the main portal and the high altar. A visit to this off-center building is well worth it, but you will be amazed by its beauty.
