OUR LADY OF SCOTS (SCHOTTENSTIFT)
Church with beautiful frescoes on the ceiling, depicting the Passion of Christ, and the oldest statue of the Virgin Mary.
The Benedictine abbey of Notre-Dame-des-Écossais was founded in 1155 by Duke Henry II of Austria (Jasomirgott). Today, it is based on pastoral and educational activities, spiritual animations and tourist reception. It has a guest house. The church of the Scots owes its name to the ecclesiastical brotherhood that was established there in the middle of the 12th century under the impulse of Duke Babenberg, Henry of Jasomirgott. The church was modified several times, but only acquired its definitive form and its baroque, rococo interior at the end of the last century. Today, the church houses beautiful frescoes on the ceiling, depicting the Passion of Christ, and the oldest statue of the Virgin Mary dating from the 13th century. Adjacent to the church, the Schottenhof residential complex by Joseph Kornhäusel with two inner courtyards dates from 1835. Franz Liszt stayed in this fine example of the Biedermeier style for several years.
Today, the building houses the Museumim Schottenstift with its collection of late medieval paintings and interesting historical views of the city. The neighboring college had among its students some future personalities such as the actor-dramatist Johann Nestroy, Wagner-Jauregg, the Nobel Prize winner for medicine, Viktor Adler, the father of Austrian Marxism, and the famous composer Johann Strauss.
