CITY SYNAGOGUE
This Viennese synagogue, in the heart of the old Jewish quarter, is the only one of the 40 not burnt down after the Anschluss.
In the heart of the former Jewish quarter, it is the only one of the 40 Viennese synagogues not to be burnt down after the Anschluss. It is still used by the Jewish community of Vienna. It was designed by the Biedermeier architect Josef Kornhäusel and erected in 1825-1826. It survived the 1938 pogrom because it was part of a housing block. At the time, only churches could be built on the street side. At the entrance to the synagogue, a memorial pays homage to the 65,000 Austrian Jews murdered during the Second World War.
