SAINT-MARX CEMETERY
This cemetery, built after a plague epidemic, is a listed historic monument.
Opened in 1784, this cemetery was built after a plague epidemic to bury the dead outside the city center, at the request of Emperor Joseph II. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is its most famous resident. But no one knows exactly where his remains lie, even after extensive research. In 1855, however, a gravestone was placed at the presumed location. This stone is now in Vienna's central cemetery, but a cenotaph still marks the spot. The St. Marx cemetery is a recognized historical monument.
