CENTRAL CEMETERY
A large park with a maze of shady paths running between the tombstones.
This large 2 km2 park was opened in 1874. Dotted with lawns, it is criss-crossed by a maze of shady alleys running between the tombstones. In the central cemetery(Zentralfriedhof), we find the illustrious Viennese, Schubert (buried here in 1888 at no. 28 of group 32A), Beethoven (Schubert's neighbor at no. 29), Mozart (buried in a common grave, but celebrated here by a monument at no. 55), Johann Strauss fils at no. 27. A little further on, behind his grave, are those of his brothers Josef and Eduard. Johann Strauss père is buried under the black pyramid. Ironically, his great rival, Joseph Lanner, is buried nearby at no. 42. At no. 46, Karl Renner (Austrian president until 1950), next to the popular Karl Lueger, mayor of the city from 1897 to 1910, who also gave his name to the cemetery church. Nearby, Bruno Kreisky (Austria's first left-wing chancellor from 1970 to 1983), writers Friedrich Torberg and Arthur Schnitzler. Other local luminaries include poet and writer Hugo Wolf, actor Curd Jürgens, composer Arnold Schönberg (inventor of serial music), Brahms, turn-of-the-century actor and playwright Nestroy, composer Glück... Politicians are buried behind the church, on either side of the central aisle. The site houses the Funeral Museum and a café at Gate 2. Horse-drawn carriage tours available from early April to late October. In October 2024, a program of events to celebrate the cemetery's 150th anniversary.
