A place to observe the different influences of different eras through the artistic styles of bronze tombs.

The religious order of the Capuchins was introduced to Vienna by Marco Di Aviano. In the Kapuzinergruft - the crypt of the Capuchins - lie several members of the imperial family. The first to be buried here was Empress Anna. At the end of the 17th century she was the initiator and sponsor of the project for the large burial chamber. The last person to be buried in the crypt is currently Otto of Habsburg, son of the last Emperor Charles I. Among the illustrious Habsburgers represented here are Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz I, Duke of Lorraine, and the "star" of the family, Empress Sissi.

Following the example of the Egyptian pharaohs, the deceased, before reaching their final resting place, are emptied of their viscera. Their hearts are placed in a special urn above certain tombs. One can observe the different influences according to the period through the artistic styles of the bronze tombs. Some of them are of a clerical sobriety, whereas the Baroque period greatly influenced those of its time. Of course, in this place of religious meditation, silence is the order of the day and a good dress code is required. The best thing to do is to take part in a guided tour: it will enlighten you and make your visit very interesting. And you will learn that no less than twelve emperors, seventeen empresses and many archdukes are buried in this crypt.
