HOUSE OF MAJOLICA - HOUSE OF MEDALLIONS
The Majolica House is Vienna's most famous and beautiful Art Nouveau building.
Along the Naschmarkt you can see some of the most beautiful art nouveau buildings in Vienna. The most famous of these is the Majolikahaus which, together with its neighbor, the Medallion House (Musenhaus), was built between 1898 and 1900. These residential buildings are particularly representative of the most flamboyant works of Otto Wagner (1841-1918) in his Jugendstil period. Inside, the architectural details typical of Art Nouveau include fabulous stairwells with wrought iron railings with large leaves and splendid gilding. But it is above all the facade covering that we admire with its abundance of giant pink flowers, the famous stylized majolica, made of ceramic tiles. The neighboring facade is decorated with finely worked gilding and medallions signed by Koloman Moser, another remarkable ornamental expression of Art Nouveau. Perched on the roof are the huge, screaming statues by the Hungarian-born artist Schimkowitz (1864-1947), the first before a long period of close collaboration between this architect-sculptor and Otto Wagner. The Viennese achievements of this architect, who still marks the urban landscape of the capital today, gave him an international reputation and students from all over the world travel to see his work.
