PARLIAMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF AUSTRIA
Take a behind-the-scenes look at the Austrian Parliament, its history, its building and even enjoy a restaurant on site.
Experience democracy at first hand... Built between 1874 and 1883, the Parliament building is one of the most impressive monuments on the Ring. Right from the start, the tone is set by the fountain with its many statues, dominated by Athena the warrior. Here sit the representatives of the Empire's peoples. At the entrance to the building, a monument pays tribute to three republican figures, including Jakob Reumann, mayor of Vienna until 1923, presented in bust form. In 2023, after 5 years of renovation work, the Parliament reopened its doors to parliamentary debates and, more broadly, to the public, as it now welcomes visitors even during sessions, just below the sumptuous Column Hall, in the "Demokratikum". This public space presents the history of Austrian parliamentarism in 27 multimedia stations. A number of educational facilities are specially designed for children and teenagers. From the glassed-in gallery, the public can watch the sessions of the National Council. Free thematic guided tours on the political institution, the architecture and history of the building, and the works of art it houses, are scheduled daily. The Kelsen restaurant in the basement also offers gastronomic delights, where you can dine in close proximity to members of parliament and other politicians of the Austrian Republic... There's also a bar and tea room. A Parliament close to its citizens!
