This monumental building with its park is both a historical heritage site and a place of entertainment.

This monumental building and its park, which you discover after the Parliament building as you walk west up the Ring, are representative of Vienna in more ways than one. It is both a historical landmark and a place of entertainment. Surrounded by gardens and preceded by a large square where many important cultural events are held, the 98-metre-high belfry features the city's emblem, the Iron Knight(Eiserner Rathausmann). In the gardens, statues have been erected in honour of the personalities who have made Vienna's history. Built in the neo-Gothic style by Friedrich von Schmidt, who also built Cologne Cathedral, the Town Hall is the largest non-religious building in this style. It may seem a little overdone to some with its imposing, immodest character, but no one can resist its splendor when illuminated.

Numerous events are held in front of the Rathaus, including a large Christmas market in December and a giant-screen broadcast of the New Year's concert in the gardens on January1. In January and February, skaters can enjoy the huge ice rink on the forecourt. In July and August, there are free large-screen screenings of the Würtelstand music film festival and beer halls in the gardens. The Rathaus is also the venue for circus performances and international sporting events.
