UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA
Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna was the first German-language university in the country, and was the scene of a number of historic events.
Located on the outside of the Ring, this institution emanates from the country's first German-language university created in 1365 by Rudolph IV the Founder. The present building was constructed at about the same time as the other buildings on the Ring, from 1873 to 1884, according to plans by Ferstel. The Renaissance-style arcaded courtyard is decorated with statues of the most famous scholars who attended the university. In addition, a medallion commemorates Mayor Johann Andreas von Liebenberg, who organised the resistance against the Ottomans in 1683.
