FERSTEL PALAIS
Southern Venetian-style palace with twelve statues symbolizing the different peoples of the Empire on its façade.
Built in 1860 by Heinrich von Ferstel, one of the masters of Viennese "historicism", this palace in the southern Venetian style housed the powerful national bank of the Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Bank and the Stock Exchange until 1877. This architect also designed the Votive Church. After the transfer of the National Bank to Otto Wagner Square, the palace was abandoned. Renovation was undertaken in 1975 and completed in 1982.
