Museum housing superb paintings by the masters of Viennese modernism, including the world's largest collection of Egon Schiele.

The Leopold Museum, the most visited museum in the MuseumsQuartier, was opened in 2001 and originally housed the private collection of Rudolph and Elisabeth Leopold. Today it houses superb paintings by the masters of Viennese modernism, including the world's largest collection of Egon Schiele: the museum exhibits 42 paintings by the artist (including Self-Portrait with Lampion Fruit and Portrait of Wally Neuzil), 187 original graphics (sketches and colored sheets), and autographs. Some masterpieces by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Herbert Böckel, Hans Böhler, Richard Gerstl and other great painters of the 19th century such as Friedrich Gauermann or Emil Jakob Schindler are also on display. Paintings, prints and objects from the 19th and 20th centuries have also been added to the collection, including valuable art and craft objects as well as original furniture by the artists of the Jugendstil and Wiener Werkstätte. In all, 5,400square meters of exhibition space! The whole is housed in a futuristic concrete building, whose architecture contrasts with the former imperial stables. Inside, large, bright rooms highlight the darkness of Schiele's and other artists' works, and the panoramic window, as well as the MQ Libelle rooftop, offer a breathtaking view of the old city. One of Vienna's most pleasant museums to visit, especially since the temporary exhibitions are of a high quality.

Wspaniała ekspozycja, wybitne dzieła. Opisy obok eksponatów wprawdzie interesujące, ale ciut przydługie.

I did not have any expectations before I visited this museum and was surprised to discover that I enjoyed it very much! Nicely curated with a number of treasures. Except for Gustav Klimt I was quite ignorant of Austrian artists, and was excited to discover Egon Schiele, Josef Hoffmann, Carl Moll, Koloman Moser, Richard Gerstl among others. You get nice views of the outside too from the museum and they have a really nice cafe where you could grab a nice bite in. We bought our tickets online in the museum website.
