IMPERIAL TREASURE
The centerpiece of the secular imperial treasury is the imperial crown, lavishly set with emeralds, sapphires, diamonds...
The Habsburg dynasty was one of the most important dynasties of all times, hence the richness of this imperial treasure presented in two parts: secular and priestly.
Secular imperial treasure. The centrepiece is the imperial crown of 962, abundantly set with emeralds, sapphires, diamonds and rubies, of inestimable value. This eight-sided crown is also of great symbolic value and incorporates several biblical representations. Hitler kept it in Nuremberg throughout the Second World War. We also discover the treasure of the Golden Fleece, a dynastic order of the Habsburgs, one of the largest emeralds in the world, a huge narwhal tooth, which some people think is a unicorn horn, or the cradle of the son of Napoleon and Marie-Louise of Austria.
Priestly treasure. While some jewels were kept in the Hofburg vaults, others were guarded by the Imperial Court chaplain in the sacristy of the palace chapel. The first inventory of the Priestly Treasure dates from 1758 and lists 500 objects, including relics and monstrances set with precious stones or enamelled private altars. In 1921, the Imperial Treasure of the Capuchin Convent was added to that of the palace. These include Ludwig I's crucifix, Joris Hoefnagel's reliquary cassette made of polished stone, Christ on the Cross and the Two Thieves, Hans Jakob Mair's monstrance of the Order of the Starry Cross and the richly decorated "Pope's Rainbow".
