The MAK presents a magnificent selection of furniture from the Middle Ages to the present day.

A must-see for those who appreciate turn-of-the-century Viennese and European art. Originally built between 1868 and 1871, the MAK features Moorish-style frescoes in the style of the period. The institution was founded in 1864 as the Museum of Arts and Industries of the Dual Monarchy. Originally, the MAK also housed the School of Industrial Arts Studies. This was later moved to adjoining premises. In 1909, a new wing was built to house the museum's collections, which were augmented by an ever-growing number of acquisitions. In 1989, the old buildings were completely renovated, and the MAK added a two-storey underground storehouse and a connecting wing between the various buildings. Renowned architects and designers were commissioned for the project. Today, the MAK remains a renowned center for experimentation in the applied arts, showcasing design and architecture, and devoting increasing energy to the promotion of contemporary art, notably through the creation of new dedicated spaces. Historical collections are concentrated in the oldest building: East Asian art, furniture and textiles, metal, glass and ceramics, objects from the Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque, Rococo, Biedermeier, Historicism and Empire eras. A large part of the museum is also devoted to the permanent Vienna 1900 collection, dedicated to the development of Viennese arts and crafts between 1890 and 1938. Highlights include Art Nouveau and Art Deco objects by artists such as Hoffmann, Moser, Wagner and Loos, architectural models and a number of period paintings, including Gustav Klimt's magnificent Tree of Life(Der Lebensbaum) fresco and a superb painting by Margaret Macdonald, dating from 1906 and recovered from the museum's repositories during its renovation. In the basement, the 2,000m2 MAK Design Lab presents contemporary design projects responding to the challenges of the 21st century. More than 500 objects, tools, scientific research and technologies present alternative paths for today's lifestyles. In the store, you'll find a wide range of books, objects and accessories. Temporary exhibitions on design, art and architecture are held throughout the year. In short, a must-see in Vienna for lovers of aesthetics!

One of the least interesting art museums I have ever been in and I have been in a lot. Save your money and don’t bother going here.

Schöner Ort. Leider viel zu teurer Eintritt für die Ausstellungen. Dazu eine Ausstellung im Umbau und nicht zugänglich. Da gibt es in Europa deutliche Besseres.
