WORLD MUSEUM (WELTMUSEUM WIEN)
Today, the Weltmuseum Wien is one of the richest ethnographic museums in the world.
Located at the entrance to the Imperial Palace, on the Heldenplatz side, and above the Hofburg Info Center, this museum is a success and a recommended stopover. The Weltmuseum Wien is one of the richest ethnographic museums in the world, with 14 rooms featuring collections of over 200,000 ethnographic objects, 75,000 historical photos and 144,000 printed works on the history, culture, art and daily life of non-European peoples. In addition to the superb exhibits, including part of the collection of British navigator James Cook (1728-1779), and the famous "Penacho" Mexican feather headdress, the museum's flagship, visitors will appreciate the relationship established between Austria and the five continents. The temporary exhibitions, which are always renewed, are of a high standard and focus on specific, fascinating themes. The latest, on view until January 26, 2025, is dedicated to the domestication of the camel and llama in North America, from prehistoric times onwards: Auf dem Rücken, der Kamele (On the back of the camel). In addition, there's a library, a boutique and the cook café & bistro, where you can enjoy world cuisine.
The gallery in the prestigious colonnaded entrance hall provides access to two other collections of Vienna's Kunsthistorisches Museum: the Collection of Historical Musical Instruments, featuring instruments that belonged to Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven, and the Imperial Collection of Arms and Armor.
