UNDERTAKER'S MUSEUM
The museum is a fine introduction to the strange relationship between the Viennese and death and the afterlife.
Skull and crossbones lovers, here's a visit for you. This museum is particularly original, Viennese style! It is run by the Viennese Funeral Service and is a beautiful introduction to the strange relationship that the Viennese have with death and the afterlife. Formerly located in the 4th district, the museum moved to the Central Cemetery in 2014 in 300 m2 premises in the basement of a burning chapel. A heterogeneous and funny collection, as long as black humor is practiced, is exhibited here. Mourning drapes that were hung from the windows to warn the neighbourhood of a death or devices to locate the "undead" are part of the visit. Various instruments are on display, as well as the different ceremonial costumes that funeral directors used to wear depending on the rank of the bodies they had to transport. Among the amusing pieces in this collection of more or less strange objects is a promotional gift from a funeral home, a cigarette case deliciously engraved with a skull and a maxim: "Cigarettes create jobs". The whole thing is in the image of this last quip, which is both fatal and tragicomic. You won't leave empty-handed: in the shop you can buy original objects such as this hearse and its Lego undertakers, small wooden coffins, plastic skeletons, stuffed bats?
