WIEN MUSEUM
A museum housing a collection of works of art, historical objects and re-enactments that immerse you in the city's history.
It was the cultural highlight of late 2023. The reopening of the Wien Museum left its mark on the Austrian capital. Record attendance for this magnificently renovated and modernized museum, with its original, interactive museography. New spaces and innovations make for a very interesting visit. However, it's one of those museums so rich that it's a bit overwhelming! What's more, once it reopened, it was so crowded that visiting it was a bit of a tour de force... The building, designed by Oswald Haerdtl, a former employee of Josef Hoffmann, was inaugurated in 1959 to house the future Wien Museum Karlsplatz, which itself dates back to 1887. During the recent renovation, which took 4 years to complete, its collections were presented at the MUSA. In December 2023, a modernized and enlarged museum opened its doors. Its collection of works of art, artefacts and reconstructions bears witness to the history of Vienna, from the Neolithic to the present day. New features include a "floating" floor with Poldi, the Prater's whale mascot, a fabulous terrace, gastronomic offerings and a beautiful reception area on the square. The space dedicated to Red Vienna and the popular innovations in housing, health and leisure of this rich, utopian pre-war period, which still retains traces today, as does the Vienna of Art Nouveau, is much appreciated. Remarkably, the museum is free of charge. Only the temporary exhibitions on the fourth floor are subject to a charge.
