Laid out in 1821 on the site of Vienna's former fortifications, this garden offers beautiful views of the Burgtheater, City Hall and Parliament. In 1862, after the moat had been filled in, the gardens were extended towards the Ring. This sumptuous "people's garden", opened to the public in 1823, is famous for its rose garden, which today boasts 3,000 roses of 400 different species. The Volksgarten, a blend of French Baroque and English gardens, boasts two magnificent fountains, the Triton and Nymph fountain and the People's Garden fountain, as well as prestigious monuments, including one in tribute to Empress Elisabeth.
