GYPSY PRATER
A charming, old-fashioned amusement park that's a great place to spend time with the whole family.
The originator of this Böhmischer Prater was Franz Bauer, a canteen worker at the Laaer Wald brickworks, who ran a small establishment on this site, which was very popular with Sunday outings. He installed a swing and a merry-go-round in 1882. Many fairground and restaurant owners followed his example. And so, today, it's the vintage, peaceful version of the great Prater that people come here for. There are no Ferris wheels here, and far fewer crowds. This is because the Bohemian Prater (a reference to Bohemia) is far less well-known than the park in the2nd arrondissement. People go there to cycle or run, but also for the charming, old-fashioned amusement park. Rides, rides and stalls, as well as gourmet trucks and sausage stands, make for an enjoyable family outing. Child-friendly attractions include a miniature version of a merry-go-round, an autodrome and a Ferris wheel. Water rides such as water balloons, water bumper cars and sea bays are particularly popular on hot summer days. Some modern attractions have joined the vintage rides, such as this caterpillar, which is nevertheless almost a century old. Europe's oldest wooden horse carousel is back in service since its renovation in 2017. Emperor Franz Joseph himself was a guest of honor at its inauguration in 1890. Before it was motorized, the staff under the carousel turned it by hand!
