This new district occupies the site of the former Aspern airfield, to the east of the city, in the 22nd arrondissement. A residential, business and leisure district, it is the latest major urban planning project by the town hall, which has won awards for its environmental quality and originality. It's an eco-neighborhood concerned not only with the environment, but also with the quality of life of its 25,000 inhabitants. It's a mixed neighborhood of social housing, affordable housing and offices. The atmosphere is peaceful and friendly, with pedestrian squares, shared gardens, playgrounds and more. Inhabitants leave the car behind. The Seestadt leaves plenty of room for people, and the car is not king here! In addition to the soft lanes, a small, driverless electric shuttle bus criss-crosses the neighborhood.
Aspern Seestadt is visited by architects and planners from all over the world. Innovative and inspired architects have been involved in building this eco-neighborhood. The most original building is the elegant 24-storey Hoho, the tallest wooden building ever erected, which houses offices, a hotel and a restaurant. So if you want to live here, it's possible.
The district has been designed around a large artificial lake for swimming and lounging. Locals and Viennese mingle here. A few tourists also visit this freely accessible watering hole, where vegetation has re-colonized the banks and islets.
