Organize your stay Vienna
Money Vienna
The euro is used in Vienna. Make sure you have some cash before you leave, as some bars and small inns do not accept credit cards. You can also easily withdraw euros from bank counters with your credit card.
Budget & Tips Vienna
The cost of living in Vienna is much the same as in Paris. You'll appreciate being able to eat a full menu in small taverns at lunchtime for less than ten euros. The bulk of your budget will be spent on accommodation and museums (of which there are many). It's de rigueur to tip waiters in bars, inns and restaurants. It's up to you, but 10% of the bill is customary. You can eat in an inn at lunchtime for a few euros, but in the evening a full menu can easily cost up to €50. You'll have to pay for bread, an aperitif and a drink with your meal. No haggling, except in thrift shops, flea markets and brocantes.
Free Wifi access in many parts of the city
Passport and visas Vienna
An identity card, even if it's out of date but less than 5 years old, is all you need to visit Austria. No visa is required.
Driver's license Vienna
Don't forget your driver's license if you wish to rent a vehicle or have one lent to you on site.
Health Vienna
No particular health risks in Vienna. No local diseases. Excellent drinking water. Strict hygiene rules in hotels, restaurants, museums and public transport, reinforced since the coronavirus crisis. Hydro-alcoholic gel available at the entrance to all public and private establishments.
Mandatory vaccination Vienna
There are no mandatory vaccinations specific to this destination. But for your own health, you'll need to keep your vaccinations up to date, just as you would in France.
Security Vienna
Austria in general and Vienna in particular are very safe destinations. There's very little to risk in the capital. However, when using public transport at busy times, be careful with your personal belongings.
Time difference Vienna
Vienna is on European time. No time difference with France, Belgium or Switzerland. Coordinated Universal Time + 1 hour. Daylight saving time UTC+2.
Spoken languages Vienna
German is spoken in Vienna, with a few Austrian peculiarities. English is common, French much less so, but still spoken in certain tourist areas, by French-speaking guides of course, by a few intellectuals with a passion for French literature and culture, and by a handful of nostalgics for the imperial era when French was the noble language.
Communication Vienna
Vienna's Internet network is well-developed and fast. The city has a large number of free Wi-Fi hotspots. The coverage provided by the various cell phone operators is also very good.
Electricity and measurements Vienna
Austria uses the same electrical sockets as we do in France, so there's no need for adapters. The temperature is displayed in degrees Celsius and distances in kilometers, meters, centimeters, etc...
Luggage Vienna
Swimsuit in summer and sunglasses, down jacket in winter! Rainwear in the off-seasons, evening wear if you go to the opera and classy outfits for chic restaurants. Good walking shoes if you are hiking in the vineyards or walking in the green areas. Having said that, the dress code in Vienna is not that different from that of France. For the rest, the Viennese gastronomy will be enough to sustain you and the richness of the museums will keep your mind busy. Take cash with you (but you can easily withdraw some on the spot with your credit card) as some bars and small inns do not accept credit cards. And don't forget your Le Petit Futé tour guides dedicated to Vienna and Austria.
