PIARISTENKIRCHE (PIARISTENKIRCHE)
Gothic Piarist church in Krems, with paintings by Kremser Schmidt and a fine Baroque organ case.
The Piarist Order was founded by the Spaniard Joseph Calasanz in 1557 with the vocation of teaching poor children free of charge. Piarist schools spread throughout Europe and Mozart attended one in Vienna. The Gothic Piarist Church of Krems houses the magnificent painting by Kremser Schmidt, Assumption, above the high altar and above all one of the most beautiful Baroque organ cases, the work of the Krems native Franz Capek, who dates from 1893.
