RUINS OF DÜRNSTEIN CASTLE
Historic castle ruins atop a rocky outcrop with views of Dürnstein, the Danube and the Wachau valley.
The ruins of the castle, built between 1140 and 1145 at the top of its rocky peak, can be reached from the centre of the village by a well marked but slightly steep path. From the top, the view of the village, the Danube and the Wachau valley is bound to be magnificent. The ruins are, of course, full of history and have a very special atmosphere. It is known that Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner in this castle at the end of the Third Crusade
