FORMER SYNAGOGUE (EHEMALIGE SYNAGOGE)
Former Ashkenazi synagogue in Jugendstil style, home to a cultural center and Austria's Institute of Jewish History.
This Ashkenazi synagogue, built in 1912-13 in the Jugendstill style, remained active until 1938, when it was destroyed by the SS. A city of massive resistance such as Sankt Pölten had to rebuild its synagogue. This was done in 1980 with the help of the state. The building now houses a cultural center and, since 1988, the Institute of Jewish History in Austria, which conducts historical research on the Austrian Jewish community and its history from the Middle Ages to the present day.
