Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) gave up his first job as a poor schoolteacher in mountain villages when a competition allowed him to obtain the position of organist at Linz Cathedral. A post-romantic composer in the tradition of Beethoven and Schubert, he was a precursor of the form and language that would mark the end of the century and lead to the break-up of the tonal world.
