A must-see in the region. These salt mines, which have been exploited since the Neolithic period until the mid-1980s, are famous. In this salt mine, the oldest in the world, a corpse was discovered in 1734 that had been preserved in salt for 2,000 years. The story of this "salt man" is impressively recreated in a museum near the underground salt lake. However, it was not until a century and a half later that archaeological excavations began to reveal the riches of the so-called Hallstatt civilization.
