SALZBURG CITY MUSEUM (SALZBURG MUSEUM)
A museum dedicated to the city of Salzburg, it houses the art collections of the wealthy prince-archbishops
Founded in 1834, the Salzburg Museum is a must-see, a civic and secular counterpart to the DomMuseum and the magnificence of the buildings and art collections of the wealthy prince-archbishops. As its name suggests, the Salzburg Museum is dedicated to the city of Salzburg, covering a wide range of topics: its history, its artistic and cultural life, its great personalities, its special features... You'll discover regularly renewed exhibitions in the sublime New Residence (Neue Residenz), inaugurated in 2007 after being refurbished as a modern museum space. In 2023, for example, an extraordinary exhibition was dedicated to Fischer von Erlach, master of Baroque architecture (1656-1723), one of the creators of the Second Austrian Baroque architectural style, who designed some of the finest buildings in Salzburg (including the Collegiate Church) and Vienna (including the Church of St. Charles). In addition, there are a number of very modern exhibitions that take a bold, sociological approach to Salzburg. For example, the exhibition on view since 2022 uses a variety of approaches to explore what makes Salzburg a "unique city". Thanks to its particularly successful museography and rich collections, from prehistoric times to the present day, the Salzburg City Museum was honoured with the first European Museum Prize in 2009. A visit that's perfect for the whole family.
