MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MUSEUM DER MODERNE)
This museum of modern art, all marble and glass, dominates the city's skyline.
Inaugurated in 2004, this marble and glass museum of modern art on the Mönchsberg overlooks the city's skyline. It is accessible on foot (for the more courageous) or by paying elevator. On four levels (2,300m2!) and in a sumptuous setting, major works by international artists of the 20th and 21st centuries are on display. At the heart of Europe, the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art is a key player on the contemporary art scene, tackling topical, socially relevant and even provocative subjects. Its mission is to defend and promote a diverse and inclusive society, and its curators and artistic directors see artistic creation as a means of knowledge and evolution. It's about breaking down barriers and transmitting art through a variety of approaches that involve visitors and allow for active participation and an artistic experience that is not only enriching but also questioning. Season after season, superb temporary exhibitions shed new light on the subject. In addition to the Munchsberg Museum, the Rupertinum in the Old Town presents 700 m² of international temporary exhibitions. The café in the upper museum, M32, offers an unforgettable view of the old town and citadel, and is a welcome stopover after a visit to this building with its rich collections and long corridors.
