40 km from Salzburg, the beautiful, well-preserved fortress of Hohenwerfen was built in 1077. The Romanesque chapel and Renaissance bell tower bear witness to its many alterations. Over the centuries, the medieval fortress was used for a variety of purposes, including as a prison.
