Small church evoking a dramatic episode.
This small 17th century church recalls a dramatic episode. At the end of the Second World War, rebel Cossacks who had fled from the Red Army to fight on the side of Germany were surrounded by the Allies in a suburb of Lienz called Peggetz, then handed over to the Soviet army. 3,000 Cossacks were killed and buried in 18 mass graves. After the war, the church of St. Anthony was dedicated to Russian Orthodox worship. The city recovered it in 1976.
