ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS (PARK MAGDALENSBERG)
Archaeological site east of Sankt Veil featuring excavations including mosaics, temple foundations and public baths
The archaeological site of Magdalensberg, 7 km east of Sankt Veit, bears witness to the oldest Roman occupation north of the Alps (1st century BC). Although a statue was discovered as early as 1502, exploration of the site did not begin until the end of the 19th century. The real excavation work began during the Allied occupation. Mosaics and the foundations of a temple and public baths can be seen. In April, the site is the starting point for the Four Hills Pilgrimage.
