BELFRY (GLOCKENTURM)
This tower is home to the largest bell in Styria and one of the oldest in Eastern Europe.
Built in 1588, this tower survived the destruction of the Schlossberg fortress. It is known to house thethird largest bell in Styria and one of the oldest in Eastern Europe. Its name - Liesl - may refer to the former St. Elisabeth's Chapel on the Schlossberg, or it may come from the word Verlies meaning "dungeon", as the cellars of the belfry housed the fortress prison. It was cast in 1587 from 1,001 Turkish cannonballs. It rings beautifully over the city at 7am, 12pm and 7pm.
