A protected jewel, this large salt lake bordered by reed beds, meadows and pastures was recognized as a unique natural area very early on. Areas were protected as early as the 1940s. The Neusiedl See - Seewinkel National Nature Park, a steppe lake of great biodiversity (340 bird species), was created in 1993. Birdwatchers will be on the lookout for the many species of breeding or passing waterfowl.
