OLD CITY
Rust's old town with its market and famous wine, elegant mansions, the old quarter and its arcaded galleries.
A visit to Rust and its listed town center is a must during a stay in Burgenland. Take a stroll through the old town, which boasts some superb buildings. As early as 1470, a market was authorized here, and from 1524 onwards, winegrowers were granted the right to mark their barrels with a crowned "R", which is still reproduced today on the corks of the famous bottles originating from the municipality, which enjoy a local appellation that is as famous as ever. It was precisely the fame of Rust's wine that led to the enrichment of the population. In 1681, the inhabitants were able to emancipate themselves from their seigniory, and the town became a town with status. This prosperity was accompanied by a series of prestigious buildings that are still the pride of the "Rustois" today. The elegant residences built from the 16th century onwards are a remarkable part of the town's heritage, and the emblem of the old town is listed as a historic monument. In the old quarter, alternating Baroque and Renaissance styles, arcaded galleries and beautiful portals follow one another along a promenade that will appeal to lovers of heritage and old stones. Not to be missed is the superb Town Hall. Storks have made their nests on the chimneys of this town center. And it's only a stone's throw from Lake Neusiedl. So there's plenty of reason to visit and even stay in this town.
