ASSEMA - ART MAKONDE

The Assema (Association of Makonde Art Sculptors) brings together various artists from the Cabo Delgado region who have a long tradition of wood sculpture. It is possible to see them at work in the garden and to buy various objects: masks, bracelets, sculptures, including busts of women of different ethnic groups, made of sandalwood or ebony, and Ujamaa, these towers of Makonde characters carved from a single piece of wood, which symbolize the "tree of life" and can take six months to make. Bargaining is nevertheless possible.
