Maxixe is a port city in the province of Inhambane. It lies in the south of the country, around 368 km northeast of Maputo. According to the 2007 census, the city has a population of around 108,824. Maxixe lies on the edge of Inhambane Bay, overlooking the Mozambique Channel. It faces the city of Inhambane, which is the capital of the province, albeit with a smaller population. The two towns are only 3 km apart, and are linked throughout the day by dhow or ferry. Maxixe is an important stopover on the EN1 north-south route and offers travelers stores, a fresh produce market, petrol stations, restaurants and banks. The town also boasts primary and secondary schools, a hospital, health centers, banks and hotels.
